What is the difference between self-publishing and traditional publishing?

Publishing quality

When self publishing was in its infancy it was regarded with suspicion by many – there were too many disreputable businesses ready to take advantage of starry-eyed authors who just wanted to see their books in print.

But self publishing has evolved to the point where today, it is considered a feasible option for authors who want to publish their books.

As long as authors are having their manuscripts professionally edited, designed, proofread and printed, it is possible to produce a high quality book.

But self publishing can be a daunting prospect for many. With this in mind, PS Editing offers a range of author services to help authors, especially beginner authors who are making their first foray into publishing, navigate the self-publishing process.

With the help of a professional book designer, I can guide you through each step from editing your manuscript, to cover and internal page layout to having your book printed and/or converted to an ebook.

Submissions

It’s tough to find a publisher who is willing to take a chance on an unknown author. So you want to make sure your submission follows the publisher’s guidelines exactly. There are three parts to a submission:

The cover letter
The synopsis
The manuscript sample

Many publishers don’t accept unsolicited manuscripts so consider approaching literary agents too.

Do your homework

Research publishers’ websites and make a list of the publishers who publish in your book’s genre. There’s no point submitting your thriller to a publisher who only publishes children’s books.
Check each publisher’s website for their Guidelines to Authors and follow their instructions exactly.
Find out who is responsible for accepting submissions and address your proposal to them.
Make sure all your contact details are clearly displayed. Don’t make it hard for a publisher to contact you.
